David Magee

National Recovery Advocate

David Magee is the bestselling author of the award-winning Dear William: A Father’s Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love and Loss, a Publisher’s Weekly bestseller featured on CBS Mornings, and an award-winning columnist and TEDx presenter. His forthcoming book is Things Have Changed: What Every Parent (and Educator) Should Know About the Student Mental Health, Substance Misuse Crisis (August 8, 2023).

David is a sought-after speaker in schools, universities, businesses and communities addressing students and parents about mental health and substance misuse challenges and solutions, and a creator and director of operations of the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing at the University of Mississippi.

As a national recovery advocate for the Integrative Life Network, a family of trauma-focused treatment centers, David Magee engages with and educates students on university campuses and in communities with families and businesses about intergenerational mental health and substance misuse and what we can do about it.

David’s oldest son William died of an accidental drug overdose not long after graduation from the University of Mississippi as an honors college student and track athlete. That’s one reason David and his wife Kent work tirelessly to save others. But David’s family story of addiction and recovery goes much deeper than that. Consider that David’s other son “died” at a fraternity house on a college campus but was brought miraculously back to life. His son Hudson is now more than a decade sober and a successful business person with a beautiful family after getting intensive outpatient substance treatment at the age of 20. Also, David’s daughter Mary Halley battled eating disorder but has found joy in recovery through treatment. And David saved himself, his marriage, family and career with through sobriety and recovery. Now, he works to help others find the joy they want and deserve.

David has been a daily newspaper publisher, small business owner, a regular guest on CNBC, and once hosted a national cable TV and radio program — The David Magee Show. He lives in Oxford, Mississippi, home of the Integrative Life Center’s Oxford treatment facility.
