A traumatic event threatens your overall well-being — physical, emotional, or mental. Unfortunately, trauma isn’t always obvious.
Life-changing events and quiet emotional abuse alike can have adverse effects on the lives of those who experience it.
The Trauma Treatment program at Integrative Life Center helps individuals process, understand, and overcome issues resulting from traumatic experiences. We offer an array of holistic and evidence-based therapies to treat mental and physical issues resulting from experiencing trauma.
Incorporating holistic and evidence-based therapies gives you the best chance to heal and recover.
Types of Trauma
A person can experience trauma for many reasons. Trauma may be deeply personal and uniquely individual. In other words, other people cannot tell you what is traumatic for you. The inability to process emotions about a situation also can result in trauma.
Trauma can include events where you feel:
Some happenings that can cause trauma include:
- Abuse – physical, sexual, emotional, or mental
- Witnessing violence
- Natural and human-made disasters
- Forced displacement
- Serious accident
- School violence
Adverse Childhood Experiences
Adverse childhood experiences negatively impact the physical and mental health of more than 60% of adults, according to a 1998 study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Kaiser Permanente. More recent studies have further affirmed those findings.
Adverse childhood experiences are stressful or difficult experiences in childhood. These experiences affect children ages 0 to 18 across all races, socioeconomic statuses, and geographic regions.
Adverse childhood experiences include:
- Emotional abuse
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Emotional neglect
- Physical neglect
- Domestic violence
- Substance use in the household
- Household mental illness
- Separation or divorce of parents
- Member of the household’s incarceration
This type of stress becomes particularly toxic when the child experiences frequent activation of their stress response system without the protection and support of adult relationships.
A child who experiences ACE’s is more likely to have:
- Life-threatening health conditions such as obesity and heart disease
- Substance use issues, with both drugs and alcohol
- Learning and behavioral issues
- Higher risks related to early sexual activity and pregnancy
