Women struggling over grief and loss

Grief: A Natural and Appropriate Response

At some point in our lives, all of us experience grief and loss. The American Psychological Association describes grief as a combination of psychological distress, separation anxiety, confusion, yearning, and more. Whether it’s a loved one, a family pet, your home, or even a treasured heirloom, your loss can significantly impact your mental health.

As a result, it’s critical to learn how to healthily express your grief and deal with your loss well. At Integrative Life Center, we view grief as a natural and appropriate response to loss. That’s why we provide holistic grief and loss therapy to guide you through your grief and process your loss in a safe, healing environment.

Common Types of Loss We Help at Our Grief Treatment Center

Regardless of the type, there is no greater or lesser loss. Grief from any loss can make a profound impact. At Integrative Life Center, we provide treatment for grief and loss of all kinds, but these are some of the most common types of loss we see:

The Passing of a Loved One

Losing your spouse, parent, or child can be incredibly challenging. Not only are you overwhelmed by the sudden practicalities involved (funeral arrangements, finances, wills, etc.), you also are likely enduring emotions you can’t understand or express. This only leaves you wondering how to properly grieve and even what to do next.

Suicide

Losing a friend, family member, or even an acquaintance to suicide is a terrible experience. Often, a loss due to suicide stirs up challenging feelings of shame, guilt, anger, and rejection that are difficult to process without the help of a mental health professional.

A Pet’s Death

The companionship of a longtime pet can hold a treasured place in your heart. So when your pet dies, grief is a very common response. But for some, the grief can be surprisingly intense, while others may stifle their grief, mistakenly believing it as inappropriate or unimportant.

Anticipatory Loss

When your friend or loved one is nearing death due to age or terminal illness, it’s common to experience anticipatory grief. This emotional preparation for death can be straining, provoking extreme worry, insecurity, and guilt, which sometimes leads to depression.

Partnering With Grief and Loss Treatment Centers: Why It Matters

When you’re confronted with a loss, there are both healthy and unhealthy ways to cope with your grief. Some may not know how to process their grief. As a result, they may seek out drugs and alcohol to cope and even spiral into depression, leading to devastating co-occurring disorders
