Grief and Loss Treatment Proram

Grief and Loss

All of us, at some point in our lives, have or will experience loss. This is why grief is a natural and appropriate response. Whether it is a loved one, pet, place, or treasured item, the loss significantly impacts mental health. Thus, dealing with loss and healthily expressing and experiencing grief is vital. At Integrative Life Center, we understand this. Our mental health professionals in our grief and loss treatment program know how to adjust, support, and guide individuals through mourning, bereavement, and loss.

Kinds Of Loss

Often, processing loss and grieving depends on the experience. There is no greater or lesser loss, but many people have difficulty addressing their feelings, depending on what or whom they’ve lost. This difficulty can result in mental health issues arising, which is why working with professionals in a grief and loss treatment program can be beneficial. Some common kinds of loss can include:

  • Family or Loved One: Losing a romantic partner (no matter whether the relationship was long-term or short) or a spouse can be extremely challenging. Not only can an individual be overwhelmed by the practicalities of death (funeral arrangements, finances, etc.), but also they may find themselves enduring emotions they can’t express or understand. When a parent loses a child or a child loses a parent, similar issues can arise. Often, individuals find themselves at a loss about how to grieve and understand what to do next.
  • Suicide: Losing someone to suicide will bring about challenging emotions. Whether a loved one close friend, family member, or even acquaintance, suicide brings feelings of shame, guilt, anger, and rejection to the surface.
  • A Pet’s Death: For many people, animal companions hold a very important place in their life. When a pet dies, it’s not uncommon to grieve. However, for some, the intensity of their grief may be too much to handle, or they may stifle their sorrow, believing it unimportant or inappropriate to mourn.
  • Anticipatory Grief: When someone close to you is nearing death, perhaps due to age or terminal illness, you may experience this kind of grief. The emotional preparation for death can be straining. For some, processing their feelings can provoke extreme worry, insecurity, and guilt, sometimes leading to depression.

How individuals deal with these losses is sometimes difficult but important to explore.

Benefits Of A Grief And Loss Treatment Program

When many people think of grief, they think in terms of losing a friend, family member, or loved one to death. But no matter the kind of loss you experience, there are healthy ways to cope and damaging way. For example, loss may push some towards using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate or numb the pain they are experiencing. This would be a negative means of coping because an individual never appropriately processes their emotions or feelings. Instead, they set themselves up through their substance abuse for addiction to take ahold of them.

At a grief and loss treatment program, individuals learn how to process their emotions. Whether those emotions are anger, guilt, shame, or sadness, patients are shown healthy means of experiencing grief. Sometimes talking about grief in a safe environment like individual therapy or group therapy is all someone needs. Other times, an individual may already be in the throes of depression, requiring more advanced therapy like psychodrama therapy or trauma-informed therapy. But no matter what, there is a therapeutic path to maintaining or restoring one’s mental health.
