What is a Personality Disorder?

A personality disorder is a complex mental health condition characterized by patterns of thinking and behavior that are different from social and cultural norms. Consequently, those with a personality disorder see themselves differently, have a hard time relating to others, and often don’t respond well to distressing situations.

Because of their challenging and inflexible thinking and behavior, those with personality disorders experience problems in their family, relationships, work, school, and daily life. They may react impulsively and develop co-occurring disorders like drug and alcohol addiction to cope, as well as struggle with depression and anxiety.

Common Personality Disorders

There are a variety of personality disorders, each with different characteristics and symptoms. No matter your condition, long-term healing is possible with the right therapy for personality disorder traits.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Those with borderline personality disorder may have strong fears of being alone or abandoned. Struggling with feelings of emptiness, mood swings, paranoia, and low self-esteem, people with this condition can engage in risky and impulsive behaviors.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder is marked by the belief that you’re special and more important than other people. Consequently, those with this condition lack empathy for other people, yet crave their attention and praise—even stretching the truth in an attempt to get it.

Histrionic Personality Disorder

Easily influenced by others, those with histrionic personality disorder may engage in dramatic, excessive behavior to seek the attention of other people. They typically have intense, shallow emotions and a distorted self–image that’s tied to what others think of them.

Dependent Personality Disorder

Clingy and submissive, those with dependent personality disorder can rely on others to meet their physical and emotional needs, even tolerating abuse to get it. Those with this condition are often unable to make their own decisions and need regular reassurance.

Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)

Disregarding social rules as well as the needs and feelings of others, those with ASPD can lie, manipulate, and exploit people. They have a tendency to act aggressively and impulsively without feeling guilty or taking responsibility for their behavior or consequences.

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)

Not to be confused with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), those with OCPD have a strong desire for order, control, and strict adherence to rules. Their inflexibility and fixation on lists or minute details can impact their relationships as well as their ability to function normally.
