The Link Between Alcohol and Anxiety

person passed out with glass of liquor dealing with alcohol and anxiety

There are a lot of links between mental health issues and addiction problems. One can lead to or be caused by another, and having both the addiction and mental health concerns can make it harder to break free. But if you get help and support for a combination problem like addiction to alcohol and anxiety issues, you’ll have a better chance at a future that’s clean and sober, as well as happier and healthier. Then you can plan for a good life and start focusing on the kinds of things you want to do with your time. At Integrative Life Center, we can help you get started down the path to recovery, and work toward the plans and dreams you have for the future.

Alcohol and Anxiety Are Often Linked

People who are facing drinking problems may not realize that alcohol and anxiety often have a strong link. Those who are anxious sometimes drink to feel more relaxed, but ultimately that’s not solving their problem. It’s only a form of self-medication, and it can be very dangerous. In time, more alcohol is needed in order to help you feel better, and not being able to drink can make anxiety worse, as well. It becomes a vicious cycle that you might wonder how you’re going to get out of.

When this happens, individuals experience what professionals call a co-occurring disorder. The underlying mental health issue (anxiety) leads to substance abuse. As more alcohol is used to address an individual’s anxiety the greater their risk of developing a dependency or addiction upon alcohol becomes. At the same time, the individual’s anxiety is going untreated and worsening through neglect and self-medication with alcohol. The treatment for this is called dual diagnosis and involves treating both conditions, the physical addiction and mental health issue, at the same time so the patient is completely healed.

But we’re here to help you succeed, so you can reduce or eliminate your feelings of anxiety and break free from your dependence on alcohol to control those feelings.

Choose the Best Program to Help With Dual Issues

When you’re facing dual issues, such as problems with alcohol and anxiety, the best way to solve those concerns is to get them treated at the same time. That way, one of them, left untreated, doesn’t get in the way of addressing the other one. If you only stop drinking, that may not solve your anxiety issues. Reducing anxiety will only help with not drinking if you haven’t developed an addiction to alcohol. But we have treatment programs that can help with all of that. Some of the options we offer include:

  • Nutritional support
  • Medical support at all care levels
  • Residential
  • PHP and IOP
  • Community re-integration
  • Art and music therapy
  • Masters level therapists

Through different kinds of therapy and interactions with others, we can show you a path that’s clean and sober, and where your anxiety is under control. That makes it much easier for you to get started on all the things you want to do, that you’ve been putting off because of anxious feelings or other issues. Your bright future is waiting, and we can help you find it.
