What’s the Difference Between an Outpatient and Inpatient Drug Rehab Program?

While outpatient and inpatient drug rehabilitation programs focus on the patient’s health and sobriety, there are significant differences between these two types of facilities.

Integrative Life Center provides people with options for inpatient and outpatient treatment for those seeking recovery from substance use.

Why Know the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Drug Rehab Programs?

To figure out what program is best for your specific needs, you first must understand the difference between inpatient and outpatient treatment. Researching drug rehab programs can be intimidating because there is so much information out there. Integrative Life Center wants to make your choices simple and helpful where you are in your healing journey.

Inpatient Drug Rehab

Inpatient drug rehabilitation centers temporarily house individuals during treatment. In other words, patients live there for a specific time. Individuals in an inpatient drug rehab program undergo near full-time professional treatment. The treatment includes a range of group and individual therapies to help with their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Inpatient drug rehabs have some significant benefits, including around-the-clock care, specialized services, and acute treatment for those who need it. But, inpatient treatment isn’t the best option for everyone. People who can’t take several weeks off work or have family responsibilities might need a different form of treatment.

Integrative Life Center has inpatient options for those seeking drug rehabilitation, including two gender-specific programs in Nashville.

Outpatient Drug Rehab

As individuals progress in their recovery, they may step down to a lower level of care, such as an intensive outpatient program. In an IOP program, patients undergo fewer hours of treatment and typically have more independence in their day-to-day living environment. In other words, people have one foot in recovery and one foot in the real world.

Some people in an IOP program may continue to work, go to school, and attend personal functions. But many intensive outpatient programs couple with transitional living to provide extra support during recovery.

Intensive outpatient programs are an excellent option for people who seek the stability of treatment but want to begin the transition to living in a world without the added support of full-time rehabilitation.

Integrative Life Center has two gender-specific outpatient residential facilities available for those interested in this level of care.

Independent Sober Living

Another option is to live in an independent, sober living environment. Sober living homes are supportive, transitional living homes that promote sobriety, responsibility, and wellness through peer support.

Residents of a sober living home may undergo treatment, but it isn’t required. Many of these residents maintain regular jobs, schooling, and personal lives. Sober living homes do not typically have in-house medical or clinical support. Still, they work for a treatment center off-site that provides support and clinical treatment when required.

Integrative Life Center clients benefit from engaging in our aftercare program, which encourages people to return to meetings and community events that help them continue sober living.

How Do I Know What Kind of Rehab I Need?

Figuring out which level of care you need can be a confusing process. The specialists at Integrative Life Center are available to help you discern what kind of drug rehabilitation program is right for you.

Rehab factors to consider include:

  • Environmental factors
  • School and work responsibilities
  • Specialized services
  • Rehab goals
  • Location
  • Length of stay

Deciding what kind of rehabilitation is right for you includes considering your specific goals, job, and family responsibilities, and the level of care you need for healing. Remember, treatment plans are different for each individual, and in inpatient and outpatient settings at ILC, people can work one-on-one with therapists and a care team to help them reach their specific goals.

Some people might progress through each of the levels of care, respectively, and others might not. If a relapse occurs, someone might choose to return to a more acute level of care. For example, some people who have already gone through a primary residential and intensive outpatient program may decide to return to an intensive outpatient program or a supportive sober living environment if they are experiencing a relapse in their addiction.
